Solar can be complicated – that’s why EnergySage has a team of Energy Advisors here to help answer any and all of your solar questions. One of our expert advisors is Jessica: we sat down with her to learn more about her time at EnergySage and hear some inside tips for people shopping for solar today.
What’s a common solar myth you hear from people looking into solar?
One thing a lot of people misunderstand is what happens if you have a solar panel system and the grid goes down. Many people think your panels can continue powering your home during a power outage. In fact, even if you have solar panels, you are tied to the grid, so your system will automatically shut off for safety reasons. If you want to be able to maintain power, you’ll need a battery back-up system.
If you could give only one piece of advice to solar shoppers, what would it be?
I recommend not getting too caught up in all of the information out there about equipment, and different wattages…and just about every other part of the whole journey. It’s most important to make sure you feel good about your installer and you’re covering as much electricity as you need with your system. Oh – and use EnergySage to shop!
Why do you enjoy working in the solar industry?
Working in an ever-changing industry is so much fun because there’s always something new to learn! Plus, it certainly helps that it makes you feel like you’re saving the world!
What’s your favorite part about working at EnergySage?
This might be the hardest question of all because there definitely isn’t only one thing. I love the team here: every single last one of the people here amazes me every single day. And there’s always coffee 🙂
Are there any upcoming trends or changes to the solar industry that you’re excited about?
I’m super excited that storage options are becoming more common; it’ll be interesting to see see how new technologies develop over time and how battery solutions become more advanced.
Do you have a favorite solar joke?
I wouldn’t call it a joke per-say, more of a one-liner: sometimes the rest of the Energy Advisor team and I say, “Our closing statement rises every morning and sets every night.” Get it? The sun!
Are there any famous solar advocates/environmentalists that you look up to?
Rachel Carson (1907-1964) was a scientist and author. Many people regard her as the founder of the modern environmental movement. She was one bad mama-jama that helped pave the way for a lot of women in this industry, so thank you to her!
When you’re not busy talking about solar, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Long walks on the beach..no, I’m kidding! I’m a Reiki Master and also love to do yoga. Traveling is another one of my favorite things to do. But a night with a glass of wine and a good friend can’t be beat. Keep it simple.
